Company Limited

Jamaica General Insurance Company had its genesis at
the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1966, its
major shareholder - Lival Insurance Limited (which for
over 50 years held agency arrangements with Norwich
Union Fire Insurance Society of England, British American
Insurance Company of Canada and The Netherlands Insurance
Company of Holland), decided that the agency had grown
to a size sufficient to support a viable independent
company, and Jamaica General was born.
The shareholding was split between Lival
and its three principals. By 1981 Lival Insurance Limited
bought out the overseas partners and Jamaica General
is now 100% local. The share capital at incorporation
was £125,000 with total premium income of £150,000
in its first year of business. These have grown to J$75m
and J$380m respectively in the year 2000.

In 1976, Jamaica General acquired the insurance portfolio
of Brandon & Bolton Insurance Limited and by 1986
had outgrown its space and moved offices to its newly
renovated and more spacious building at Duke Street,
where it can still be found.
Today
We pride ourselves in being truly Jamaican. Our logo,
the pineapple, is also found on Jamaica’s coat
of arms. This fruit is universally symbolic of hospitality,
which is an accurate reflection of the human warmth
and sense of welcome you feel when you deal with our
company.
We are equally proud of the inherent culture of “family”
that we maintain within our organization. The result
is a cadre of employees who are not only committed and
loyal to the organization, but also to the provision
of excellent customer service. We have a staff of sixty
five (65) many of whom have been employed with us for
over 15 years.
As our name suggests we are a general insurance company
providing solutions in the following areas:
