Profile on The Insurance Company
of the West
Indies Limited (ICWI)

The origin of The Insurance Company of the West Indies
(ICWI), dates back to 1953 when its founder, Dennis
Lalor, was employed to Lister Mair (Insurance) Ltd.,
agent for The Contingency Insurance Co. Ltd., a U.K.
based general insurer. Mr. Lalor later acquired the
agency after the death of its principal Lister Mair
in 1953. This led to the establishment of Dennis Lalor
(Insurance) Ltd., and later grew into The Insurance
Company of the West Indies Limited (ICWI), the first
fully Jamaican-owned general insurance company with
offices located at 51 Duke Street, Kingston.

At the official launching ceremony for ICWI on May
21, 1969, the then Minister of Trade & Industry,
Robert Lightbourne described the company’s advent
as “a milestone in Jamaican insurance history,
for the objective is not only to serve Jamaicans at
home, but Jamaicans abroad.”
From the very first day of operation with an initial
authorized shareholding of _250,000 ICWI has consistently
recorded increases in assets as well as in premium income
and has consistently presented itself as a customer-oriented
company which speaks the language and understands the
needs of the Jamaican people.
In 1975, to accommodate its growth, ICWI moved from
Duke Street to the newly completed ICWI Building in
New Kingston at 2 St. Lucia Avenue, Kingston 5. With
business interests in Cayman, Trinidad and the Bahamas,
and alliances in Europe and North America, we are proud
of our many achievements, most of which have been “firsts”
in the Jamaican insurance arena.
Today we continue to strive towards excellence, steered
by a strong management team and supported by a highly
trained support staff. ICWI’s strength today bears
testimony to its Mission Statement: -
“. . .to be the leading General Insurance Company
in the Caribbean and Central America, providing the
highest levels of service, good employment opportunities
and optimum profitability”.
ICWI, where . . . serving you is all we do.
