Profile on Globe Insurance Company Limited (GLOBE)

It was in 1852 that Globe Insurance Company of the West Indies Limited had it's genesis, when one of the earliest insurance agencies in the Americas was established in Jamaica. Shortly afterwards, the prominent Jamaican firm of Lascelles, deMercado & Company assumed the operation of the agency, and this involvement continues to the present day.

In 1962, shortly after Jamaica became independent, the decision was taken to incorporate a local insurance company, and so it was in 1965 that Globe Insurance Company of the West Indies Limited was created. The initial shareholders were Lascelles, deMercado & Company, the Royal Group, and the legal partnership of Milholland Ashenheim & Stone.

The next decade saw significant growth for Globe, and in 1978, the Company acquired the Jamaican insurance portfolios of Prudential Assurance Company and Guardian Royal Exchange Group.

In 1989, after 137 years in Jamaica, the Royal Insurance Group sold their shares to Lascelles, deMercado & Company, who took the opportunity at the same time to acquire the minority shares of the remaining shareholders.

In 1998 further expansion took place when GWI Insurance Services Limited (formerly named Wray & Nephew Insurance Agency), became a wholly owned subsidiary of Globe.

Today - and from humble beginnings a century and a half ago - Globe has built a reputation as a highly respected insurance entity, with an extremely strong balance sheet. This has been achieved through a combination of conservative underwriting practices and prudent financial management.

Evan Thwaites

Managing Director, Globe Insurance Company of the West Indies Limited and GWI Insurance Services Limited, Evan joined Globe in 1980. He was trained by Royal Insurance in the United Kingdom, and in the United States. Upon his return to Jamaica, he was appointed General Manager in 1992 and Managing Director in 1998.

General Manager, Operations, Globe Insurance of the West Indies Limited, Michael joined Globe in 1998 with over twenty years experience in the industry. He is responsible for the administration of Globe's Underwriting and Claims Operations. Gordon Arnold

Gordon Arnold

General Manager, Marketing , Gordon joined us in 1999. He has thirty-eight years experience in life and general insurance and has worked in all the major insurance markets of the Caribbean in senior management positions.

Yvonne Daley

Underwriter Yvonne has over twenty-five years of experience in general insurance. She has been with us for over twenty years, and is acknowledged in the industry as an expert in her field.
