Profile on JAGIC.
The Jamaica Association of General Insurance Companies
is an association of general insurers, formed in 1963
to address the interests and concerns of general insurers
in Jamaica. It is at this level that the chief executives
of the companies or their representatives discuss and
make policy beneficial to the industry taking into account
the interests of the insuring public.
With the independence of the nation in the early 1960's,
the Insurance Industry in Jamaica began to take on a
decidedly Jamaican flavour. Most companies were then
only agents of overseas companies, (mainly British),
and they were to remain so for another decade. However,
the Jamaicanization of the industry had already begun
as enterprising young Jamaicans having learned the business
of Insurance were serving notice that they were ready
to begin the building up of an essentially Jamaican
industry; JAGIC was one of the first manifestations
of this.
At present, the Association is chaired by Mr. Leslie
Chung of British Caribbean Insurance Company Limited.
The Deputy Chairman is Mr. Andrew Levy of Jamaica International
Insurance Company Limited.
Each month the Association meets to review matters
of interest and concern. Implementation of the Association's
plans and programmes is the work of the staff of the
Association Secretariat which has its Office Building
at 3-3A Richmond Avenue, Kingston 10.
These Associations of underwriters often review matters
of a technical nature and recommend changes or modifications
within the framework of the objectives and the policies
of the Association.
Through the Association, the general insurance industry
is able to communicate with other areas of the industry
such as brokers and agents, with Government through
the Superintendent of Insurance or various Ministries
and with the public through jointly sponsored public
relations/education programmes.
The Association also maintains contact with other agencies
whose work is relevant to insurance such as the Office
of Disaster Preparedness and Internationally with the
Association of British Insurers and the United States
Agency for International Development (USAID).
During the last few years J.A.G.I.C. has expanded
its role within theindustry and to the public at large
through a carefully prepared public education programme.
